Holocaust Memorial Day Events

Over 350 Year 7 students from across our schools have worked with Historyworks, a company bringing history to life, former Children’s Laureate Poet Michael Rosen and local Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD).

Students have attended a poetry workshop with celebrated author and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen, in which they heard his own family story of the Holocaust and how he discovered over 40 years what happened to his Great Aunt and Uncle. He read poems he has written on the topic and students wrote their own original pieces of poetry in response to the project.

We also welcomed local Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke, who spoke movingly to students about her experience and the devastating impact it had on Jewish people across Europe, so that the horrors will never be forgotten.

Students will also take part in the HMD Civic Ceremony in Cambridge on Sunday 26th January at the Corn Exchange. They will read their poems alongside Michael Rosen, perform dance and drama pieces inspired by his poetry and the CAP choir will sing a specially commissioned song Michael has written as well as students’ artwork being displayed.

Cambridge Academic Partnership has been working with these partners for the last three years meaning over 1500 students have experienced the project and its lasting effects.

Craig Morrison, Executive Headteacher, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day serves a multitude of purposes in schools like ours. It is not only an opportunity to remember and mourn the horrors of the greatest terror and tragedy of the twenty-first century, but it is also an opportunity for pupils of all ages to consider issues of difference, freedom and identity in our society today. We are very grateful to Michael Rosen and Eva Clarke for their work with our students, which I know has been hugely valuable.”
