Under 16 Basketball Finals

The CAP Under 16 boys basketball team secured a memorable Valentine’s Day and a third district title in four seasons by beating Netherhall and Chesterton in the finals held at Long Road.

The team, comprising of boys from Parkside, Coleridge and Trumpington had an unbeaten run to secure their place in the finals. The semi-final against Netherhall went the same way as all of the early season games with a fast start with Luca Vicini providing the leadership and pressure allowing Josh Simon to score the early baskets.  With a 26-6 lead at half-time Coach Foulkes was able to make sure all players contributed on court. Matas Cockcroft made an immediate impact with strong drives to the basket and three quick baskets to his name. The game ended with a highlight of the day, perhaps, with Karl Holmes calmly scoring a 3-pointer as the buzzer went to close out the game. 40-16 full-time score.

The final pitted us against Chesterton, rivals through the age groups for this group of CAP players. We had lost out in Year 9 but were victorious last year albeit with players who are now at Sixth Form college. Chesterton had won their semi-final convincingly and the third-fourth playoff was close between Netherhall and Cottenham. Again we had our trademark strong start and lead 6-0 after less than two minutes. At 8-2 in front our attacks stuttered a little and Chesterton took their opportunities putting further pressure on CAP. We took a slender lead into half-time 12-10. The second half started with the first basket to us after which Chesterton got back into the game further, even taking the lead at one point. Both teams were in foul trouble in the second half with every further foul resulting in free-throws to the opposition. We were able to get our noses back in front through Luca Vicini and with Chesterton chasing possession and giving away further control we were able to get a little control back. Into the dying seconds of the game Alfie Bruce Doig was able to extend our lead to 3 with one successful free throw. With 1.8 seconds remaining Chesterton took a time out. All that was left was for us to get the ball into play safely. The buzzer sounded signalling a 25-22 win for CAP.
